Saying that the 2013 Varsity Wauwatosa West girls tennis team has had a good season is merely an understatement. The team has been great this year, winning the Triple Crown, which the Trojans accomplished by winning the conference tournament, conference, and the crossover match between division champions. This is the Trojan’s best season in school history.

Varsity girls tennis team have put together a great season. The team has shown how confidence and practice can lead to a great season and a great future for Wauwatosa West tennis.

The Trojans’ No. 1 singles player, Nicole Meylor, stated “we’ve done better than others thought.” On October 7th, Meylor had her first match in the subsectionals, against Germantown. She won the match and improved her record to 28-2. Meylor has been one of the strongest players on the Trojans this year.

Head coach Kosta Zervas was JV coach at Wauwatosa East for 9 years before coming to Tosa West as head coach in 2006. One of Zervas’s biggest goals was to build his own program, and this season shows for Zervas that patience pays off in the long run. With the success of this season, Zervas also hopes to send players to state to show off the solid season that his Trojan girls have put together.

“We [the team] are all first in conference, which is a first in history, so that’s pretty cool,” said Alyssa Heyer. She agrees that everyone has done a really good job. Heyer has played on the girls tennis team in 9th, 10th and now 12th grade. She prefers playing doubles to playing singles.

“Doubles is more fun,” said Heyer. “You have more people than yourself to count on.” Heyer and her doubles partner, Alyssa Goodwillie, are done for the season, with a record of 14-6.

With the end of the season in sight, Zerves hopes to have some players finish off strong at state, which is coming up later this month.
